Any item added to a course can be visible or hidden to students, but we can also condition the visibility of these items on a circumstance that must be met beforehand.
This option is configurable for any item added to a content area, whether or not it is actual content. You can access it either from the item's edit screen or from the course body by selecting Publishing Conditions in the dropdown menu.
If the item already had conditions configured, those conditions will also be shown to students and instructors when hovering the mouse over the item in the course body.
Showing Content to Certain Members
If you want certain content to be available only to specific users or groups, select the option Specific Members or Groups under Select Members. This will show options to select users enrolled in the course or groups that have already been created.
Simply select and click outside the dropdown to save your selection.
Showing Content Between Certain Dates
Check the box Date/Time. This allows you to add a start date and time and/or an end date and time for visibility. The conditioned item will only be available during this time frame.
For items with a due date, this date must fall within the interval during which the item is available. To assist you, an informational message with the due date will appear.
Showing Content After Certain Milestones
Another option is to condition an item so it appears only after a certain milestone is met, such as making an attempt on an activity, achieving a minimum grade on an exam, or having read a specific document.
This is done by checking Activity. Select the item and the requirement, and that’s it. If multiple requirements are needed, click Add Activity Criteria to add another row.
Combining Criteria
It is important to remember that you can combine these criteria to create more complex rules, for example creating an exam that students in a group will see, but at a certain time and only if they have previously passed an activity.
When you have all the criteria for the rule defined, click Save. At that moment, you will see a panel where you can choose whether the item is visible (not accessible) or remains hidden until access is granted.
In that same panel, you will see if the item you are editing has inherited rules (for example, those from the folder it is in).
Creating Multiple Rules
This option is useful if you have criteria that exclude each other and need two or more rules to cover all cases.
You cannot create the second rule until you save the first, so create your rule and click Save to see the option to create that second rule.
