The gradebook, as its name suggests, contains all the grades for the various activities completed by students in a course, but it serves much more than simply displaying those grades.
Among other things, you can use it to locate and access ungraded activities, view the grading history, send reminders about pending activities, or assign exceptions to students who need them.
You can access the gradebook from the top menu of each course, although you can also access it from the base menu by clicking Grades and locating the course you want to access.
The gradebook allows you to view content from different tabs and perspectives:
- The grid view, where you will see all gradebook items in columns and each student in a row.
- The gradable items list view, where you will see one activity per row, with information such as categories and due dates.
You can switch views using the buttons in the upper-left corner, above the grid or list, to switch from one view to the other.
The list view displays general information about each activity and its status, and allows you to publish, access grading, reorder, and, from the three-dot icon (...), edit and access information about each activity.
The grid view, on the other hand, allows you to search, filter, and view all students with their grades for each item, and even download them to Excel for offline processing. By clicking the students’ names, you can access each student’s holistic view.
You can also access the list of To Do items, that is, items to grade and publish, and manage them (from editing the assignment to grading and providing feedback) by clicking the cells and headers.
Other things you can do from the gradebook:
- Create calculated columns based on other existing columns
- Hide columns to simplify the view
- Create grading schemas and grading categories
- Access the rubric management interface
- Send reminders to students who have not submitted a particular activity
- Grant exceptions to students for the course or for a specific activity
