Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) is an initiative managed by IMS Global Learning Consortium that allows the integration of web-based learning tools hosted externally into courses.
That is, the tool displayed is actually hosted outside the platform but communicates with it through the LTI protocol, informing our course of what the student has done while using it.
Not all applications and tools found on the internet have LTI integration. Moreover, these tools are probably already defined by our institution. Therefore, we only need to go to the Content Store and add the item to our course.
Can an LTI Tool Be Graded?
As mentioned, it depends on the purpose and objective of the tool. If it allows grading, simply enter the settings and configure the grade according to the available parameters.
Where Can I Find These Tools?
The number of LTI tools depends on each Institution. We can find them in 3 different places:
- System Tools. Here we will find, in addition to the native Blackboard platform tools, LTIs that allow generating or working with content globally. You can access this from Tools in the base Ultra menu.
- Course Tools. If the LTI tool allows global management for the entire course, it will have access to those functionalities from the menu Details and Actions > View Course and Institution Tools.
- In the Content Store. When adding an item to the course, the Content Store is where we will search for the LTI tool.
In the Tools menu, you can access various functionalities and applications available to your user. As an instructor, you can access:
- Content Collection. Provides access to a document manager for your user to use later in courses. This link will only be visible if your institution has activated it.
- Other Applications. Access to other platform applications and third-party applications.
Depending on the profile or role assigned to you, you will see more or fewer tools. Likewise, when the Institution incorporates new tools into Learn, they will appear here. Similarly, a course will have its own tools.
