In Open LMS we have multiple notifications, which can also be sent from different channels to the student and in different situations. This gives us great flexibility when working, allowing us to indicate anything from new content being available, to notifying that an assignment has been submitted and is awaiting grading, or that a backup has failed.
Not all of these notifications reach every user in the system; depending on our role and privileges, we will receive more or fewer notifications (if we are not teachers in any course, we will not receive any indication that a submission is awaiting grading).
Combining this with the different channels and situations (user logged in at the moment or not), leads us to have many options and combinations for these notifications.
For example, a notification that a new message has been received on the platform can be sent to the user via mobile, email, and as a popup if they are logged in at the time of receipt, and only mobile and email if they are not logged in.
To configure the default notification settings, go to Site administration > Messaging > Notification settings.
Here you can configure, on the one hand, which channels will be used to notify, and on the other, the default preference for each notification, user status, and existing channel combination.
Configuring notification channels
Let's start by activating the notification channels we want to make available for the platform:
By checking the boxes, you can enable each of the channels: Activity stream, web, campusM alerts, email, and mobile. Some of them have extra settings that you can access by clicking Settings.
- Activity stream refers to a block available where notifications will be displayed.
- Web refers to the bell icon that appears at the top next to your profile.
- Mobile needs to be configured and will show push messages to users who have the app installed.
Configuring notifications
For each notification, you will see a row in the table, with a cell for each enabled channel. If you want to completely disable a notification, turn off the switch in the Enable column for that notification.
For each type of notification and channel, you will have the following preferences:
- Enabled (on/off): This switch controls whether the notification is sent or not for the channel.
- Locked (on/off): This switch indicates whether the end user can change the Enabled switch for the channel.
With these two switches, there are 4 possible combinations,
- Enabled unlocked
- Enabled locked
- Disabled unlocked
- Disabled locked
End users will be able to edit those notifications that are unlocked.
Click Save at the bottom to finish.
Once everything is configured, each user can enable or disable those notifications that are not forced
