Surely you have thought that in your course you would like a certain resource or activity to be available only to a group of students who meet a certain condition. Let's see how to condition the visibility of an element to one or more conditions.
To add a condition, we will go to the editing screen of the element we want to condition and click Access restrictions. Then click Add restriction.
You will see that you have many different restrictions to choose from. They all work similarly although, for obvious reasons, they will require different data, so we will not go through them one by one. If there are groups in the course, an option will also appear to restrict elements to group members.
Let's look at three of the presented options: Activity completion, Grade, and Authorization code.
Also remember that when using the date, we prevent the student from seeing the activity completely, while if we use dates in the Availability area, the student will be able to see the activity description.
This type of conditioning can be paired with LMS rules and/or activity completion settings to create more complex options.
Activity completion: After clicking the option to select it, we will see a form where we choose the activity and its completion status.
Grade: We select the activity (it must be gradable), and work with the "greater than or equal to" and "less than" boxes to create a grade range in percentage. For example, "greater than or equal to 50%" or "greater than or equal to 15% and less than 55%".
Authorization code: This rule will limit access only to those students who have obtained a certain authorization code. Once the option is selected, we will type the code in the box and that's it. These authorization codes are assigned automatically when LMS rules grant them; the student does not have to enter the code anywhere.
When we add multiple restrictions, we will encounter more complex condition structures to fulfill:
- First, we can select whether the student must or must not meet the condition. This also applies to simple restrictions.
- Second, we can choose whether all or any of the conditions must be met.
- For each restriction, we will have two icons. The X to delete the restriction, and the eye, which will make the restriction visible or not to the student.
