Can I reuse part or all of a course in another? Will I have to recreate everything from scratch in the next edition of the course? These questions are always on the minds of those of us who work creating courses.
You're in luck! No, you won't have to recreate the course from scratch, and yes, you can reuse part or all of the course without any problem. Let's see how.
Open LMS has functionality to create backups that can also be restored or imported, fully or partially, allowing us to extract from one course those parts we want to copy into another. You can see all the options under Course Administration > Course Reuse.
If you reuse the course in the sense that when a course ends, the same course is reused with new students, without creating a new instance of the course, you can use the Reset function to make the course like new.
Resetting a Course
Resetting the course means that we will delete all traces of activities, forum messages, grades, and other student interactions, as well as the students themselves from a course in order to reuse it.
Since deleting this data is irreversible, we recommend that you make a backup first before proceeding with the reset.
When you access the reset screen, you will find a series of course elements, organized into categories, which you can check to reset using the checkboxes. At the very bottom, there are buttons to select all / none and to apply the changes.
Once you have selected all the elements to reset, click Reset course, and after a few moments, a screen will appear with a summary of what was reset and the result of the operation.
Using a Backup
With this option, you will create a backup of your course and then you can restore it in another different course, either fully or partially.
In this article, we explain how to create and how to restore a backup.
Importing Resources
This option is performed from the course receiving the material, where you launch the import option and then locate the course and, within it, the material you want to import.
You can see the entire process in this article.
