Let’s look at the specific options available in the assignment settings. https://ayuda.elearningmedia.es/hc/es/articles/15471131993372-Open-LMS-Contenido-Actividades-y-recursos.
The options under Availability allow us to control the dates between which the activity is available.
- Allow submissions from is used to indicate the date from which students can submit their work. If left blank, they can submit at any time from when the activity is added.
- Due date is the date by which students should have submitted the assignment, although submissions can still be made after this date. These late submissions will be marked as late.
- Cut-off date is the date when submissions will be closed. After this date, an extension must be granted to allow submissions. Leaving this date unchecked means the assignment can be submitted at any time.
- Remind me to grade by is the expected date to have grades published, and it is used to prioritize notifications sent to the teaching staff.
By checking Always show description, the description (if checked in the original box) will be visible from the date the activity is added. If unchecked, it will only be visible once the date chosen in Allow submissions from arrives.
As you can see, these options let you manage the dates during which the activity is visible and/or submittable, as well as set deadlines for the teacher and send reminders to avoid delays in grading assignments.
Submission types controls what the student can submit as a response to the activity. Here we choose whether the activity consists of text that will be written directly in the provided text box (Online text) or uploading a file (File submissions) or both.
When selecting online text, the option to add a word limit for that text box will be enabled. You enter the maximum number of words the student may use.
If file submission is selected, you can choose the maximum number of files to submit, the maximum size of those files, and the accepted file types.
Click Choose and select the file type from the displayed list. For example, selecting documents will expand a list where you can select specific document types, such as doc and pdf.
Under Feedback types, you select which format or formats you expect to send back to the student.
- Feedback comments allows feedback to be added to each submission.
- Annotate PDF lets the teacher “draw” on the student’s submitted attempt as if it were paper.
- Feedback files will allow uploading feedback as files of any type.
- External gradebook spreadsheet gives the teacher the option to download a spreadsheet with the grades.
- If Inline comments is enabled by selecting Yes, the submission text will be copied into the feedback box, allowing comments to be interwoven within the student’s original text. Remember to use a different color!
Submission settings control the submission process and its conditions:
- Require user to press a button to submit allows the student to upload a draft and continue working on it later, needing to press the Submit button for the assignment to be considered ready for grading.
- Require submission statement acceptance will require students to accept the submission conditions before submitting.
- Allow resubmission offers three modes: never, manual, and automatic until passing. With Never, the submission is unique and final. With Manual, the teacher can manually grant one more attempt. With Automatic until passing, the activity will reopen until the passing grade set for this assignment in the gradebook is reached.
- Maximum number of attempts limits the maximum attempts in both manual and automatic reopening modes.
With the resubmission options, you can have assignments that improve and refine over time, such as a phased project completed during the course, as well as quick activities with a single gradable attempt.
