Courses and organizations created use a set of default properties that we can customize. To work with this default configuration, we will access it from the Admin Panel > Courses > Course Settings > Default Course Properties or Admin Panel > Organizations > Organization Settings > Default Organization Properties.
- Available by default is used so that courses are available from the moment they are created, or remain unavailable (and therefore students could not enter them) and become available later. The correct value for this option largely depends on how each institution works. If students enroll in courses as soon as they are created, it might be useful to leave them as unavailable and once the instructor has built/reviewed the content, they themselves activate them.
- Allow guests by default. This currently only affects courses with the Original experience. This option would allow unidentified users to access the courses. For this to happen, this option must also be enabled globally from Gateway Options. In any case, guests will only be able to see those resources that the instructor marks as public, and under no circumstances will they be able to access forums, exams, assignments, and other elements that may contain sensitive information.
- Allow observers by default. This option allows observers to access courses by default. Observer users can see certain parts of the course and the interactions of the user they are observing, but they cannot interact with the course in any way.
-
Default enrollment options. These options control how students will be enrolled in the course.
- Instructor/administrator. In this option, the instructor adds students by searching for them or in batches, or the administrator performs this operation one by one, in batches, or through some integration. This is the most common method.
- Self-enrollment. In this option, each student enrolls in the course or courses they need by searching for them in the catalog. This self-enrollment can be limited to certain dates and may even require an access code to enroll.
- Default duration. Here we can specify the default duration of courses. It can be Continuous (without a determined duration) or date-restricted. A third option is that it lasts a certain number of days from enrollment.
All these options can be changed at the time of course/organization creation as well as later by editing the course/organization properties.
We also see a section that controls the experience with which courses are created by default:
This is the option that will appear selected when creating a new course, and also the option that courses created by integration will use if the course experience is not specified in the integration file.
