Activity completion is a feature that allows us to configure when we consider a certain activity to be completed. Some will be considered completed once viewed (for example, a PDF). Others may require a submission or reaching a certain grade. Completion tracking enables Open LMS to save and display the elements that the student has completed throughout the course.
This option is configurable for all activities and resources you can add to your courses and is located on the editing page. Let’s take a closer look at what is available there.
The first step is to enable Completion tracking. Depending on whether it is a resource or an activity (i.e., if it is gradable), there will be one or two options to enable:
- Mark as complete manually by the student, available for all course elements.
- Mark as complete based on conditions, available only for gradable elements.
Manual completion is done by clicking the corresponding checkbox of the element. Once marked as complete, it will be indicated.
Completion based on conditions will be marked automatically once the selected conditions are met, which largely depend on the type of element being configured.
- Require view: the activity will be considered complete when the student has clicked on it. This option exists for almost all elements. For some (such as labels, which are not clickable), it doesn’t make sense and therefore is not available.
- Require grade: the activity is considered complete once a grade is received. Available only for gradable activities.
- Require posts/entries: to be considered complete, the student must write a certain number of posts or entries in the activity. This option is available for, for example, forum and database activities.
- Require minimum score: considered complete when this score is reached.
- Require passing grade or all attempts completed: this option marks an activity as complete when the grade specified as passing for the activity has been reached. Optionally, it can be set to mark as complete if no attempts remain. This option is found in quizzes.
- Require submission: considered complete when the submission has been made, whether graded or not. This completion option applies to assignments.
- Require Passed/Completed status: In SCORM, certain statuses can be required to complete it.
- Expected completion by: DATE: this is the date by which the activity should be completed. It is not shown to students but is visible in the progress report.
Not all options are listed here, but a good number of them and their meanings are, so... let’s get to work!
Progress is also shown both on the card in the My Courses area and in the course content table.
Progress for all students will be reflected in the Activity Completion Report:
Additionally, it is possible to bulk edit the completion conditions of all activities in the course.
